Cadiz police investigate hotel scam

CADIZ, KY (WSMV) -

Cadiz police are investigating a scam that preys on hotel guests.

The ploy involves a con artist posing as a hotel employee over the phone and asking guests for personal information.

Cadiz police were alerted to the scam this morning by Yvonne Wynn, manager of the Super 8 Motel at 154 Hospitality Lane.

Wynn said an unknown male called the hotel front desk and asked to be connected to a specific room. When the call was answered by a hotel guest, the scammer represented himself as a hotel employee.

The guest was told he was entitled a refund on his room and only needed to provide his credit card details. Having paid for his room with cash, the guest realized the scam and hung up the phone.

To avoid this type of scam, remember the following tips:

  • Never give personal information over the phone
  • If you're called by someone claiming to be an employee while you're staying at a hotel, hang up the phone and call the front desk yourself
