Homeowners witness horrific crash, fire in front yard

McMINNVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

Robert and Sheila Peche of McMinnville were asleep in their bedroom last Wednesday night when suddenly they heard what sounded like a huge explosion.

"We came running out to see what it was. A car was sitting up against the tree," said Robert Peche.

The 17-year-old driver, according to police, was speeding down West End Avenue, lost control and careened into a tree in the Peche's front yard. The impact threw three teenage passengers out of the car dazed and bloodied. The driver was trapped as the car burst into flames.

"Everyone was hollering and screaming. The first thing was to get to the garden hose to get the fire out so that the young man in the car would be OK," said Sheila Peche.

Another neighbor tried to unbuckle the trapped driver's seat belt as the fire intensified.

"They were trying to get him out, they couldn't get the seat belt undone, he was unconscious, it was a nightmare," said Sheila Peche.

Arriving emergency units finally freed the driver. What the Peche family witnessed in their own front yard will linger with them for a long time.

"The images will never leave, they never will," said Sheila Peche.
