CLARKSVILLE, TN (WSMV) -
Recent Northwest High School graduate Eric Phillips will have a brand new car when he heads to college this fall.
Phillips won the top prize in the Clarksville-Montgomery County School System's annual Pass and Go giveaway.
On Saturday, he and other students tested their luck by selecting keys and trying to start a new car at Wyatt Johnson Mazda. To his surprise, Phillips' key started the vehicle.
Phillips has three vehicles to choose from - a Mazda 2, Hyundai Accent or Toyota Yaris. According to school district spokeswoman Elise Shelton, the teen will pick a car after he talks about it with his parents.
Phillips earned entry into the Pass and Go giveaway by passing four advanced placement exams. All students who take and pass the AP exams are eligible.
"The purpose of the program is to encourage students to take more rigorous classes to better prepare them for college," Shelton said in an email.
Phillips plans to attend the University of Tennessee this fall.
