A private investigator has filed an official complaint with federal authorities, saying her surveillance proves Three Angels Farms violated trucking regulations.
Twice this year, horses had to be euthanized after wrecks involving Three Angels Farms, a livestock dealer based in Lebanon. In June, a trailer split in half on Interstate 440. Before that, in January, a trailer overturned after the driver said he fell asleep.
In May, private investigator Terry Torreance followed a Three Angels Farms truck from its home base in Lebanon as it made a trip of more than 28 hours to Presidio, TX. That's the border town where horses are off-loaded and trucked to a Mexican meat slaughter plant.
Torreance documented and photographed the Three Angels truck on its route, noting that the driver never watered nor fed the horses, and continued to drive longer than 11 hours without stopping to rest, as required by federal law.
Torreance's report echoes what Three Angels drivers have told Channel 4 - that the company's owner, Dorian Ayache, insisted that drivers break federal laws that are designed to keep people safe on the highway.
Scott York was the driver behind the wheel in June, when the Three Angels trailer he was hauling split in half. York said Ayache refused to allow the drivers to stop on the drive to Texas.
"He basically said, 'You go all the way, or you're out of a job,'" York said.
York also said there was a place to water and feed the horses along the way, but that Ayache didn't want to spend $100 to buy the hay.
York said the horses would arrive dehydrated and exhausted.
"Some of them didn't make it. I've had to drag nine of them off the trailers because they didn't make the trip," he said.
Some of the horses, he said, had to be shot immediately on arrival because they couldn't even make it as far as the slaughterhouse.
