Mocs picked to finish fourth in SoCon

SPARTANBURG, SC (WRCB) -- Southern Conference media and coaches both tabbed Chattanooga to finish fourth this fall in preseason polls released Thursday as part of SoCon Media Day.

The Mocs finished 5-6 overall and year ago and were tied for sixth in the SoCon with a 3-5 mark in league play, but lost four of their league games by a combined five points.

"Everybody's been bringing that up today," UTC head coach Russ Huesman said of last year's close calls. "Everyone's talked about how close we were, but I don't think any of the teams felt sorry for us. Georgia Southern and App definitely didn't, and hopefully we didn't feel sorry for ourselves.

"It's just our job to make some adjustments and now find out how to win those games."

Georgia Southern is the preseason favorite in both polls after winning the regular season title in 2011. The Eagles, who return eight offensive starters and seven on defense, earned seven of the nine first-place votes on the coaches' ballot and 25 of the 30 first-place nods from the media.

Appalachian State was picked second in the coaches poll ahead of Wofford, but the two flipped places in the media poll ahead of the Mocs. The Mountaineers and Terriers finished tied for second last season at 6-2 in conference play.

The final five teams were the same in both polls, with Furman picked fifth, followed by Samford, Elon, The Citadel and Western Carolina.
