NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -
State troopers said there has been a significant increase in traffic deaths in Tennessee this year.
As of Wednesday, 553 people have died in traffic accidents on Tennessee roadways since January. That figure is nearly 30 more than this time last year, a 6 percent jump.
State officials believe a better economy and a mild winter have contributed to the increase.
Officials said alcohol and lack of seatbelts are also playing a big role in the increase.
As a result, state troopers are increasing DUI enforcement and handing out more tickets to drivers who don't buckle up.
