Smyrna police have arrested and charged the ex-chief and ex-treasurer of the Smyrna Rescue Squad on suspicion of embezzlement from the organization.

David Edward Manning and his wife Danielle Annett Manning are accused of taking funds from the non-profit organization's account for personal use.

Police said the Mannings admitted to making nearly $4,000 in personal purchases with the group's credit card dating back several months. The couple resigned their positions from the group in April or May 2012, police said.

According to its website, the Smyrna Rescue Squad helps law enforcement with search and rescue operations and other tasks, and the group is funded by donations and fundraisers.

The Mannings both face charges of theft and have hearings set for Sept. 24.
