SMYRNA, TN (WSMV) -

Two teens are in critical condition after their truck crashed into a Rutherford County creek early Tuesday morning.

The wreck occurred around 3:45 a.m. at Morton Lane near Almaville Road.

Crews had to extricate a 16-year-year-old driver and a 17-year-old passenger from a red Nissan that crashed 12 feet into the creek.

The truck was in the creek for about 30 minutes before police received a call around 4:15 a.m.

"It appears where this car was located down the embankment, many cars could have driven by there and had no idea they were there," said Smyrna Police Sgt. Bobby Gibson.

Police said the teens were not wearing seat belts when the wreck occurred, and alcohol was also not involved. Rather, speed and inexperience may have played a part.

"It's just a reminder to all of us that getting out there driving around in our youth, we don't consider the consequences at that point in time," Gibson said.

The teens, whose identities have not been released, were transported by LifeFlight helicopter to Vanderbilt Medical Center.

After being closed for a few hours, the road was reopened around 8 a.m.
