Sinkhole at Hampton Inn parking lot in Dickson, TN
NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -
Severe storms packing strong winds, frequent lightning, heavy rain and hail are responsible for leaving damage overnight across Middle Tennessee.
Wind damage in Mt Juliet has been classified as a "microburst" by the National Weather Service, with winds estimated at 65 mph.
Church Hit By Lightning
Trinity Church of the Nazarene on Vultee Boulevard in south Nashville was struck by lightning around midnight, causing a fire and the steeple to be destroyed.
"It was a big, white, tall steeple it was the first thing you'd see," said church member Robert Blair.
The church steeple had been there since 1986, Blair said.
"This church is part of my family, I've been a member since 1955."
When crews arrived, the church's roof was on fire and they found the steeple had fallen to the parking lot.
Church pastor Mike Proctor, his wife and another person were at the church preparing for vacation Bible school when the fire started.
"There was just a loud clap of thunder I was pretty certain it hit the church," Proctor said.
Proctor said there was minimal damage to the inside of the church, and they believe the building will be open for Sunday services. Church officials are waiting to hear from Nashville Fire Department as to whether the building is safe.
Car Into Sinkhole
A sinkhole swallowed a car owned by an Arkansas driver who was staying the night at a Hampton Inn in Dickson, TN.
The driver was headed to Nashville to see her daughter dance in a Nashville ballet summer program.
The manager of the hotel said an employee noticed the car in the sinkhole at about 6 a.m.
Around 1 a.m., a driver had to be rescued from floodwaters at Orr Avenue and Elm Hill Pike.
Around 5:45 a.m., two people had to be rescued from a truck and car on Tulip Grove Road in Hermitage. The road had become engulfed by floodwaters after Stoners Creek overflowed its banks.
The high water was also blocking the entrance of a nearby apartment.
At Interstate 40 near the Second and Fourth Avenue exits, the roadway had to be closed overnight due to flooding. The roadway was back open by 5 a.m. for the morning commute.
Trees Down in Hendersonville, Brentwood
Trees were downed at the Glenbrook Shopping Center just off Vietnam Veterans Boulevard in Hendersonville. A light pole was also blown down at the center.
On Cloverland Drive in Brentwood, a tree fell on a man's vehicle, which brought down some power lines. The driver called 911, but he didn't want to get out of his vehicle to avoid the risk of getting shocked by the wires. Fire crews had to respond to get him out.
Portland Businesses Damaged
Officials in Portland said at least two businesses sustained roof damage, including Daido Corporation, in the 1000 block of Fred White Boulevard.
A wall on the back of the plant was partially collapsed and is structurally unsound. The roof also had a large hole about 100' long by 50' wide.
More damage was reported at Shoals Technology, in the 100 block of Shoals Way.
