NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -
Nashville students have a little more than a week before they return to the classroom, but new teachers are headed to work Wednesday to learn about the school district.
Hundreds of new teachers with the public school system will gather for an orientation to learn about the students and community they will work for.
Nashville school officials said new teachers will learn about the district's structure, programs, teaching, learning expectations, accountability and the culture of Nashville.
The new employees will also learn about the teacher evaluation system that all teachers in the state have their performance based on.
This is also the first year that many new teachers are being offered $40,000 as a starting salary, which is a result of a property tax increase passed earlier this summer.
Last week, the Metro School board was told there are about 100 teaching positions still need to be filled. Most of those positions are in middle and high schools.
Officials said they are confident that they will be filled before the start of school Aug. 1.
