Shanterrica Madden sentenced 29 years in prison

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (AP) - The roommate of a Middle Tennessee State University basketball player was sentenced 29 years total in prison Tuesday for stabbing the athlete to death.

Shanterrica Madden of Memphis was convicted in May of second-degree murder in the March 2, 2011, death of Tina Stewart, also from Memphis, at an off-campus apartment they shared.

Madden was sentenced to 25 years for second degree murder and four years for tampering with evidence.

Circuit Court Judge Don Ash ruled the two sentences should be served consecutively.  Madden's attorney is expected to appeal the ruling.

At her trial, Madden acknowledged stabbing Stewart but claimed she had acted in self-defense against her larger and more athletic roommate. Prosecutors argued that Madden's action was premeditated after Stewart reported her for smoking marijuana.

The 21-year-old Stewart was a veteran on the Lady Raiders team.
