Child sex abuse spikes during school vacations

NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

Local experts discovered an alarming statistic regarding children in Middle Tennessee and what happens to them during their spring and summer vacations.

It has officials concerned enough that they're issuing a warning to parents.

"We were a little surprised when we looked at our data and saw there really is a pattern," said Lisa Dupree, a social worker for "Our Kids," an outpatient clinic of General Hospital.

More Middle Tennessee children are sexually abused during the spring and summer.

"Over the last 10 years of our data there's no question that we see many more children in those months - again, March through August - than we do other months of the year," said Dupree.

Dupree examines child sex abuse victims from 45 Middle Tennessee counties. She said the spike in abuse is not just season-specific, but month specific, when kids are typically on vacations.

On an average month they see 65 to 75 kids. During March, June and July it goes up to an average of 80 to 95.

"I think the obvious answers are that time of spring break and then certainly in the summer when kids are just not in organized activities," said Dupree.

Dupree believes less time spent with parents or in school means more exposure and vulnerability.

"The more kids are out and around other people, the more opportunities there are for something to happen," said Dupree.

In the weeks leading back up to school Dupree encouraged parents to be extra vigilant.

"Let your kids know it's OK to tell," said Dupree.

And don't be afraid to ask questions about who they're hanging out with and why.

"When you send your child to a trusted friend's house you may or may not know who that friend is allowing around your children. But I think, know as much as you can know where they're at and who they're around," said Dupree.

Professionals at "Our Kids" also wanted to remind people it's extremely important to report abuse if you suspect it. In fact, in Tennessee, it's required by law.

To report abuse you can call 1-877-237-0004.
