MIDWAY, Utah (UTC) -- Chattanooga Mocs rising senior Steven Fox made it to the round of 16 at the United States Amateur Public Links Championship before falling to fellow collegian Kevin Aylwin (UNF).
Aylwin grabbed a 1up win over Fox at Soldier Hollow Golf Course.
The two halved the first seven holes with six pars and a birdie matching each other shot-for-shot. Aylwin broke through first as his birdie on the par five eighth gave him a 1up lead.
A bogey on 10 by Fox made it a two-hole deficit but Aylwin gave a hole right back with a bogey on 11. It was Fox's turn on the bogey roller-coaster falling behind by two again with a bogey on 12.
The 15th hole saw Fox close to within one with a birdie on the par four. Both golfers parred out to give Aylwin to one-hole advantage.
Fox got his day off to a good start with a 2&1 win over Brett Patterson of MTSU. The pairing attend school approximately 100 miles apart are both from the mid-state region (Patterson is from McMinnville), but they had to travel roughly 1,700 miles for this meeting.
After both parred the opening hole, Fox tallied back-to-back birdies to take a 2up lead. Patterson answered with a birdie of his own on four to cut the margin back to 1up.
It remained 1up until Patterson's bogey on seven put the Mocs all-region performer back to 2up. He got it back to 1up with a birdie on nine.
Fox birdied two of the next three to take his largest lead, 3up, on 12 with six to play. Patterson immediately birdied 13 to make it 2up and made it interesting with a birdie on 16 to whittle the lead back to 1up.
It was over on the par three 17th, however. Fox parred while Patterson bogeyed for the 2&1 victory.
