MNPS hiring part-time teachers

The people who help make Nashville "Music City USA" could help shape a future generation of music makers.

Metro Nashville Public Schools have begun hiring part-time teachers for the 2012-2013 school year in a variety of subjects, including music.

"When school opens Aug. 1, we're looking for some people with subject matter expertise in music, Spanish and math," explained MNPS spokeswoman Meredith Libbey. "We're looking for people who are willing to teach a course or two, but are not necessarily interested in becoming full-time teachers."

While applicants don't need a degree in teaching to fill one of the available positions, there are a few requirements.

Applicants must have a bachelor's or master's degree, with at least 24 credit hours in the subject he or she wishes to teach, and at least 10 years of experience.

"For example, if you have been a musician and possibly have a degree in music this may be an opportunity for you to teach," said Libbey. "We'd love to have someone who has deep-rooted interest and a lot of experience so students will really learn what it's like in the real world."
