NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

Quick action from boaters and fire crews prevented a possible water disaster after an early morning boat fire Wednesday on Percy Priest Lake.

A boat caught fire at the Nashville Shores Marina and a propane tank exploded, according to fire officials.

"It was crazy," said witness Mike Merietta. "The heat was absolutely searing. It felt like it was 120 degrees or more. It felt like an oven and we were standing outside."

The men on board told firefighters they had just brought it back to the marina around midnight after experiencing electrical problems when the fire ignited.

Other boaters were able to cut the fiery boat loose from the marina to save other boats from damage, but two nearby boats were damaged by the flames.

The loose boat sank later Wednesday, and leaking oil and fuel was visible on the water's surface.

"They'll have to get somebody down here to recover this boat. I mean, the gas and oil alone will kill the fish," Heather Wiley said.

Nashville fire officials conducted tests on the water Wednesday and said they did not find a hazardous amount of pollutants.
