Losing the spare tire could improve gas mileage

Posted: Updated:

Want better gas mileage? Then you'll have to give up your spare tire and clean out your trunk.

Many automakers are now replacing the traditional spare tire in new cars with Fix-A-Flat solution or inflation kits, because they weigh much less.

A typical spare tire tips the scale at around 30 pounds, and sometimes as high as 50 pounds, whereas those tire kits usually weigh less than six pounds.

According to the Department of Energy, eliminating the spare tire is equal to saving about one mile per gallon of fuel.

That could save some drivers as much as $100 per year.
