Illegal immigrant program to be heard by Supreme Court

Posted: Updated:

Tennessee Supreme Court justices will hear oral arguments Thursday on an illegal immigration program, known as 287(g), which is currently used in Nashville.

The program is a partnership between federal authorities and local law enforcement that allows participating agencies to question a person's immigration status.

Three civil rights groups want the state Supreme Court to block Davidson County's participation in the program.

Plaintiffs in the lawsuit point to the story of Juana Villegas, who was detained by the Davidson County sheriff's office and later gave birth while in shackles.

The Davidson County Sheriff's Office began participation in the 287(g) program in 2007.
