CLARKSVILLE, TN (WSMV) -
The Clarksville-Montgomery County School system said Monday that private data connected to about 110,000 people has been stolen by a hacking group.
The problem was first discovered when a 911 call was made just before noon on Sunday to the Clarksville Police Department that the records had been hacked. The police department contacted CMCSS, which started investigating what might have been accessed.
This information includes Social Security numbers, emails and school identification numbers from school staff and students.
The hackers, called Spex Security, said they have already released information on more than 14,000 school system employees and this statement, according to the Leaf Chronicle newspaper.
Spex Security said in a statement that their "primary suspects include the U.S. government for torturous and deceptive acts on our own soil" and Clarksville was "primarily targeted due to their belligerence."
The school system said Monday they are taking action following the breach.
"All school system websites have been shut down," according to CMCSS Assistant Director of Communications Andrew Pitt. "The school system is seeking outside expertise in additional web security and have requested law enforcement assistance."
