Gen. Colin Powell promotes book in Nashville

Posted: Updated:

Former Secretary of State Gen. Colin Powell spoke to a large audience Wednesday evening at Belmont University.

He was in town to discuss his new book, It Worked for Me: In Life and Leadership.

Powell, who served as an advisor to four presidents, talked about what it was like to be inside the nation's power circles. He said President Ronald Reagan, to whom Powell served as a security advisor, wanted to get rid of all nuclear weapons.

He said even though Reagan publicly called the Soviet Union an evil empire, he actually wanted to help them become a peaceful empire.

Powell also said he is concerned about the current political gridlock in Washington. He said the Founding Fathers disagreed on many issues but still needed to form a consensus for important events such as drafting the Constitution.
