NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

Metro Council members got their first look at Mayor Karl Dean's proposed property tax increase Tuesday.

The mayor is asking for an additional $0.53 per $100 of appraised value.

Mayor Dean said the money is needed for hiring more teachers, paying them more and fixing up several schools.

Both sides are already lining up, the Nashville Tea Party is against it. Another group called "Moving Nashville Forward" is supporting the increase.

The proposal passed on its first reading 30-4 Tuesday, with three members abstaining, but the debate is expected to heat up during budget meetings next week.
