NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

A necropsy report released Monday said the winning horse in the Iroquois Steeplechase died of an aneurysm of the pulmonary artery immediately after the race on Saturday.

"Arcadius," an 8-year-old gelding, finished the race, went to cool down and then collapsed.  The horse was quickly attended to by trainers and medical staff but was pronounced dead.

"The horse was in excellent physical condition ... There were no other significant gross findings," said Diagnostic Pathologist Bruce G. McLaughlin with the Kord Animal Health Laboratory.

In 2000, another horse that raced at the Steeplechase also died of an aneurysm.
