Crime Stoppers: Walmart purse snatcher uses mace on victim

Posted: Updated:

CHATTANOOGA (WRCB) -- This week in Crime Stoppers, police are on the case of a man who maced a Walmart shopper.

It was all for a purse, that he didn't even get away with.

This low-life maced a woman, and took her purse. Other customers tried to stop him, he maced one of them, too.

He needs a stint behind bars to consider his misdeeds. If you help us identify him, there's cash waiting.

The guy we're looking is a thief and really a piece of work for choosing a 29-year-old woman as his victim.

"When she turned to look at him, he pulled some mace out and sprayed her in the face with the mace and then took her purse and ran out the front door," says Officer Nathan Hartwig, spokesperson for the Chattanooga Police Department.

The surveillance video comes from the Gunbarrel Road Walmart the night of March 21. While it doesn't catch the initial crime, it does catch the thug, as he is trying to make his getaway.

"The victim comes running after him and several people inside the store, some of the other customers, try to stop this guy from getting away," Hartwig says. "And during the struggle, he ended up spraying one of the customers, also."

He makes it out into the parking lot where he tossed the purse and fled in what appeared to be a Ford pickup truck.

"He's wearing a green T-shirt with some white writing on the front, blue jean," Hartwig describes. "He has short, dark hair. Just a medium build white male."

Remember, he used mace in the commission of this crime. Mace is a weapon. That could up the charges against him.

"We're hoping that he is from the area," Hartwig says. "And, that could be the issue. That he's not from the area and that's why he was bold enough to come into a Walmart and do that, knowing that he'd get caught on video."

If you have any information, let's get this thug off the streets.
