The bite has been good, not great, but good. There has been a lot of talk about the lack of really big Spots turning up this year and I agree, it does seem a bit off for sure. We've had an unusual number of very thin looking fish since September, but I've seen very good signs as of late. The Spotted Bass are thickening up nice and I've landed quite a few 4lbr's in the past couple of weeks. If there was a virus maybe it will not live through the cold winter months. We shall see. Tons of pressure out there on the weekends and I'm sure that has something do with a slow bite. It will get better over the next couple of weeks.
Spotsticker Jigheads, hand-tied Jigs, and Crawlers are working best for me right now. I'm tipping the Crawlers with a standard Big Bite skirted twin tail Grub and the Jigheads w/ the always faithful Shaking Squirrel. I'm getting more bites on this than anything. There is a jerkbait bite on windy points early but it's very short lived. My advice if you're fishing here or Lanier/Allatoona over the next month is to stock up on SS products because you will need them to get bit consistently.
The Striper bite has been as good as I can remember over the past few years. Great to see all the 15-20lb fish being caught. Trout, Shad, Herring, doesn't matter just downline 25-35ft and cover water. There are lots of small 15-20 fish schools out there right now but they won't stay under you long so keep good lively bait on and hope you double up. I've caught some fish on an A'rig too but it's tough to get that bait in the Strike Zone and keep it there. The Stripers aren't willing to come up very far to get it evidently and I still haven't figured out the right combination of weight. I've been using 4---1/4oz on outside with a 1/2oz in the middle. I'm gonna try all 1/2oz baits and see if that makes a difference. I'm using the Dayton Boat Dock Rig made by FLW pro Micheal Neal on Chickamauga Lake. If you haven't tried it, check it out it's a good bargain.
Good luck out there.
