Historic hotel in Monterey now out of business

Posted: Updated:

MONTEREY, Tenn. (AP) - The historic Imperial Hotel in Monterey is out of business because it does not comply with fire codes.

The hotel's 1,600-square-foot ballroom had been used for reunions, business meetings and other occasions in recent years. The building dates back to 1909, but it did not provide overnight guest service for the past 40 years or so.

The ballroom's southside exit has been eliminated to make way for a trail leading to a new train depot museum, creating the safety problem, according to the Cookeville Herald-Citizen.

Hotel owner Wyman Taylor lost a court battle to keep the building open.
