Georgia, Lady Vols split dramatic softball doubleheader

Posted: Updated:

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WRCB) -- Ivy Renfroe was one out away from her second career no-hitter.

An hour later she was handed her sixth loss of the season.

Krysten Sandberg recorded Georgia's first hit, a solo home run with two outs in the top of the seventh, to force extra innings and the tenth-ranked Lady Bulldogs rallied to beat host Tennessee 3-1 in eleven innings in the opener of an SEC doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon.

Renfroe (9-6), whose first career no-hitter came against Furman earlier this year, got her revenge by fueling the ninth-ranked Lady Vols to doubleheader split with a 2-1 win in the nightcap.

After Sandberg's homer forced extra innings, the opener remained knotted at 1-1 until Paige Wilson's RBI-single in the eleventh. Ashley Razey quickly drove in an insurance run with a single of her own to complete the scoring.

With a runner aboard in the bottom half of the inning, Erin Arevalo caught Madison Shipman swinging to end the game and pick up the win for Georgia (30-8, 9-5 in SEC).

Renfroe hardly seemed phased by the tough-luck loss in the nightcap, striking out nine while giving up just one run on six hits and three walks in a complete game effort.

The Lady Vols (29-8, 10-6) recorded just four hits in the contest, but Shipman redeemed herself with a two-run single to left-center in the third.
