NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

A scenic view of a setting sun suddenly took a deadly turn late Saturday afternoon in Franklin County.

A father and son were on top of Sewanee Mountain at the location known as "the rock" just off Highway 41A when police say Eric Petrilla lost his balance and fell.

Police say Petrilla's son tried to catch him before falling some 50 feet, but it was too late.

Petrilla was flown to a hospital in Chattanooga where he died a short time later.

The Franklin County Sheriff's Office is investigating the incident.

Channel 4 News will continue to follow this story throughout the day.
