Col. Sanders hometown building park in his honor

CORBIN, Ky. (AP) - Instead of chicken and secret herbs and spices, a group in southeastern Kentucky is using concrete, clay and cement to honor a native son - Col. Harland Sanders.

The students from Somerset Community College are constructing a park and memorial to the Kentucky Fried Chicken founder in Corbin, the hometown of Sanders and where he got his start as a businessman with a restaurant, gas station and motel.

"Friends of Colonel Sanders" organizer Suzie Rasmus told The Times-Tribune (http://bit.ly/GJXKAe) that the money to pay for the park is coming from fundraising. Rasmus said the group has raised $16,000 of the $47,000 needed to build a statue of Sanders.

Rasmus said the main source of fundraising has been selling bricks that people can use to honor family and friends.
