Hearing held for woman accused in fatal wrong-way crash

NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

A woman accused of causing a fatal crash by driving the wrong way on I-65 stayed away from court Thursday.

But, Rebecca Benson's lawyer says she is constantly thinking about the woman she killed.

Investigators say Benson hit Steffanie Leonard head-on near Wedgewood Avenue, after Benson entered the exit ramp heading the wrong direction.

Leonard died at the scene, and police say Benson had been drinking before the accident. Now, she is charged with vehicular homicide.

"I think that the focus should be on Miss Leonard and her family," Benson's attorney David Raybin said. "And my client has certainly been thinking about her as opposed to her own actions that have resulted in this. That's what's important."

Benson's case now goes to the grand jury to determine whether there is enough evidence for a trial.
