BEAUMONT, TX (RNN) - A 41-year-old man is in custody after a fatal shooting in front of a Texas courthouse today.

The police have confirmed that one woman died on the sidewalk just outside the courthouse. In total, authorities say four people were shot by the gunman, but they would not release information on any other possible fatalities.

In custody is Bartholomew Granger, who was at the Jefferson County Courthouse for allegedly sexually abusing his daughter. Criminal District Judge John Stevens was to hear the case.

According to the Chronicle, the suspect has a criminal history that includes convictions for drug possession and unlawfully carrying a firearm.

The shooting occurred around 11:20 a.m. CST in front of the Jefferson County Courthouse in Beaumont.

Authorities said the suspect left the courthouse to get his gun out of his truck. Four people were shot on the scene before the suspect got back into his truck and drove away, still shooting.

"People were ducking under cars," said Police Chief James Singletary."This is a classic shootout that our guys handled well."

Singletary estimated that seven or eight officers returned fire at the suspect, wounding him. He then entered a building two blocks away, where he took hostages for a short period of time.

He eventually surrendered to police in the interest of treating his gunshot wound.

Details have not been released on the victims who survived the attack, although at least one is in stable condition. They are being treated at area hospitals.

Authorities are not sure if the gunman targeted his victims.

"At some point, I think it may have been random," said Singletary.

The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office is the lead agency for the case, although the FBI, ATF and local police department are also involved in the investigation.

Beaumont is in southeastern Texas, 80 miles east of Houston.
