ERIN, TN (WSMV) -

A Houston County dentist was arrested for allegedly prescribing controlled substances to people without seeing them as patients in his office.

Dr. John S. Paffrath, 56, of Erin, works as a dentist at the Hilcrest Dental Clinic. He is accused of writing prescriptions to at least four people to obtain scheduled drugs such as hydrocodone, oxycodone, Xanax and Valium, according to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation.

Paffrath is charged with four counts of unlawful dispensing of prescriptions after the investigation, which was requested by the 23rd Judicial District Attorney General's Office.

The TBI said the medications were prescribed in excessive quantities and for "medical complaints outside (Paffrath's) area of expertise."

Paffrath was jailed in Houston County on $10,000 bond.
