A Fort Campbell soldier remained in custody in North Carolina in connection with a homicide in Clarksville.

According to officials at Fort Campbell, Specialist Nicholas Rico Durant is assigned to the 101st Combat Aviation Brigade.

Durant was taken into custody Saturday by the North Carolina Highway Patrol and is being held in the Buncombe County detention facility awaiting extradition to Montgomery County, according to officials.

A woman believed to be Durant's girlfriend was found shot to death in a bathtub at Building 6, 1523 Nolen Rd, police said. Investigators identified the victim Sunday as Shardae Wright, 23. Fort Campbell officials confirm the victim was a soldier stationed at the Army post on the Kentucky - Tennessee state line.

An eyewitness told police Durant pointed a gun at Wright.

That's when the witness went to get help, then heard several gunshots.

Police say Durant fled from the scene and went to a friend's house and disclosed that he got into a fight with Wright and shot her. Police were able to determine that Durant had fled the area in a white Dodge Charger and his possible path of travel.

Law enforcement agencies were contacted along the escape route and the vehicle was spotted by the North Carolina Highway Patrol near the interchange of I-40 and I-26.
