CAMDEN, TN (WSMV) -

The Benton County sheriff said a correction officer has been fired after two inmates tried to escape the jail through the ductwork.

According to Sheriff Tony King, the attempt happened last weekend, when the two inmates were placed in a room that was not designed for holding prisoners.

The sheriff said the pair tried to climb out through a vent for the heating and cooling unit, but there was no exit through the ductwork, and the men were caught.

King said the correction officer who placed the men in the room has been fired, and the matter remains under investigation.
