Supreme Court considers law on lying about military medals

Posted: Updated:
WASHINGTON, DC (WSMV) -

A man's lie about receiving the nation's highest military honor could reshape our nation's free speech.

The Supreme Court took up the issue Wednesday on whether it should still be against federal law to lie about being awarded military medals.

A California man was prosecuted after he told a public board meeting he won the Congressional Medal of Honor. But now, he is arguing that the 2005 Stolen Valor Act is unconstitutionally broad, and even some lies are protected by the First Amendment.

The court still hasn't made a decision, but as it stands, the law makes it a federal misdemeanor, punishable up to a year in prison to lie about military honors.

Should lying about earning military medals be protected under the U.S. Constitution? Weigh in on the Channel 4 Facebook page.
