Nashville "cashmob" aims to drive business to local shops

NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

A local group is setting out to spark the economy. It's just like a "flashmob" but without the dance - it's called a "cashmob" and it only requires your wallet.

Cashmob Nashville is a new movement that encourages people to shop local, while also aiming to keep small businesses alive.

The Knox County mayor tried it out last week and got a huge response.

A cashmob is simple. People gather at a local shop, bring $20 each and spend it all there.

Blaine Wimberly, a New Mexico native and a cashmob advocate, says the cashmob experience is also social.

"We want to bring people out from behind their computer screens and get out in the community and meet people again," said Wimberly.

Cashmob Nashville just launched their website, or you can follow them on Facebook and Twitter at CMobNashville to find out exactly where and when cashmobs will be held.

The first cashmob is on Saturday, Feb. 25.
