'Don't Say Gay,' helmet law bills set for Tuesday votes

NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

State lawmakers will return from their President's Day holiday with two bills generating a lot of interest set to come up for committee votes Tuesday.

In the Legislature, there has been a lot of talk about what the so-called 'Don't Say Gay' bill does and does not do.

Gay rights groups want to make sure it doesn't prohibit teachers from confronting gay bullying.

Right now, the bill prohibits talking about or providing materials about anything other than natural human reproduction science.

While some lawmakers say that it won't do anything to prevent counselors and teachers from stopping bullying, some groups aren't sure and are calling on lawmakers to add a specific provision in the bill on bullying.

And another bill scheduled in subcommittee Tuesday would repeal the motorcycle helmet law by allowing riders 21 and older to go helmetless if they choose.

Right now, state law requires all motorcyclists to wear a helmet.

This bill has come up for several years and has never passed, but some like its chances this year.
