FLINT, MI (WNEM) -
Police in Flint are investigating after an elderly man's body was found inside his pickup truck that was parked in his driveway.
It happened Monday morning at 730 East Parkway near the corner of Pierson and Saginaw in Flint.
The man, identified as 86-year-old John Morgan, had recently received a Consumers Energy shutoff notice and may have been trying to keep warm.
Police tell TV5 they do not consider Morgan's death to be suspicious. Authorities said relatives indicated Morgan had health issues.
According to other media outlet reports, Morgan's power was shut off on Friday for failing to pay a $290 bill.
Police are currently awaiting autopsy results.
"It's a sad situation," said Consumers Energy's Debra Dodd. "Consumers fully supports and is cooperating with law enforcement in the investigation into this incident."
Consumers says they have a policy in place not to shut off utilities to senior citizens in the winter months, but someone has to notify the company and register the individual for the company to be aware that a senior lives at an address.
The utility company will code the account to show that, and Morgan's account was not coded.
Consumers told TV5 they did knock on the door on Feb. 17 and no one answered. They then turned off the electricity to the home.
Consumers recommends letting them know if you have a parent, grandparent or elderly relative so they can enter them into the protected category.
