Cold temperatures increase risk of black ice and freezing fog

Posted: Updated:
NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

The Monday morning commute will pose icy hazards for drivers in Middle Tennessee and southern Kentucky.

Many roads, especially lesser traveled roads, are still wet after hours of rain and snow.  As temperatures drop into the mid-20s overnight, we expect patchy areas of black ice to develop.

The most hazardous conditions will develop in the eastern areas of Middle Tennessee.   The least hazardous in western Middle Tennessee.  And moderately hazardous in central Middle Tennessee (including Nashville).

Additionally, freezing fog may develop overnight, particularly in areas east of Nashville.  Freezing fog creates a thin layer of ice on pavement, creating extremely slippery conditions.  If fog is visible Sunday night and/or Monday morning, there's a good chance that ice is associated with it.

Temperatures will rise quickly Monday morning with bright sunshine.  Most areas should rise above freezing by 9:00 a.m..  Be sure to watch Channel 4 News Today with Paul Heggen to get the latest temperature updates.
