Flu season off to late start but beginning to pick up

NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

Although it has been a mild flu season so far, the sniffling and sneezing are slowly but surely making their way across the U.S.

The mild winter temperatures and relative lack of snow are contributing to the late start of cold and flu season.

In a typical winter, people stay indoors more and therefore more easily spread the bug, but health officials said we're not out of the woods yet.

The National Flu Map is beginning to light up with reported cases of influenza.

California is reported widespread flu outbreaks and more than a dozen states, including Missouri and Alabama, are reporting regional or local flu outbreaks.

As for Tennessee, officials said there is a minimal level of reported flu activity so far.
