CHATTANOOGA (WRCB) -- Former Georgia running back Thomas Brown has accepted an offer to become the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga football team's new running backs coach.

UTC officials confirmed the hiring Tuesday night. Our media partners at the Chattanooga Times Free Press are reporting Brown was offered the job after interviewing on Tuesday.

Brown replaces Jamaal Fobbs on Russ Huesman's staff. Fobbs left for a position on Turner Gill's staff at Liberty in early January.

This will be the first coaching job for Brown after spending one season as an assistant strength and conditioning coach at his alma mater.

Brown played for the Bulldogs from 2004 through 2007, rushing for 2,646 yards and 23 touchdowns. He was a sixth-round draft pick of the Atlanta Falcons in 2008 and spent two years with the team before playing one final NFL season for the Cleveland Browns.

Huesman also announced the hiring of new offensive line coach Alex Atkins on Tuesday.

Atkins comes to UTC from Itawamba Community College in Mississippi, where he spent two seasons as offensive line coach and recruiting coordinator.

He replaces Geep Wade, who held the same position on Huesman's staff before leaving for a job at Marshall two weeks ago.

"We were very impressed with Alex during the interview process," Huesman said. "He brings a lot of knowledge to the offensive line and we are excited to have him.

Atkins was an All-American offensive lineman at UT-Martin. The four-year starter graduated in 2007 and spent two seasons as the Skyhawks' tight ends coach working alongside current Mocs' offensive coordinator Marcus Satterfield.

He also served as a graduate assistant at Marshall in 2009.

The two hires leave one position left to fill on Huesman's staff after the departure of defensive line coach Jimmy Lindsey to  Furman two weeks ago.

Huesman told the Times Free Press he hopes to hire a linebackers coach to fill that position by the end of the week.

The Mocs will open spring practice at the end of the month.
