NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -
Local law enforcement agencies reported several car accidents early Saturday as a winter storm passed through Middle Tennessee.
The Metro police department responded to more than 20 wrecks between 2:30 a.m. and 4 a.m.
Just before 3 a.m., officers shut down the east and Westbound lanes of I-40 near Old Hickory Boulevard in the Hermitage area because of wrecks and icy conditions. The westbound lanes were partially blocked.
According to scanner traffic, the Interstate was so slippery that officers had trouble getting out of their cars.
The Tennessee Department of Transportation sent a truck to the area to salt the Interstate.
The eastbound lanes were reopened by 6 a.m. Crews reopened the westbound lanes before 8:30 a.m.
Metro police also closed I-40 west at Charlotte Pike in West Nashville because of a crash at about 3 a.m. Officers said a UPS truck overturned and partially crushed a Metro police car. The officer in the vehicle was not seriously hurt. That part of the Interstate reopened at about 9 a.m.
In Dickson County, officers shut down I-40 near State Route 840 because of a multiple-car pileup. Officers with knowledge of the situation told Channel 4 News that at least 6 vehicles were involved in the collision, including two semi-trucks.
The Tennessee Highway Patrol also reported wrecks in Wilson, Rutherford and Williamson counties.
At about 3 a.m., a pickup truck hauling a camper overturned on I-24 west near Sam Ridley Parkway in Smyrna.
In Hendersonville, a car skidded into a pond at about 4 a.m. on Sanders Ferry Road in Hendersonville. The driver was not seriously hurt.
