Bulger's Beat: Ballet performance will be dancing the Blues

A unique artistic combination of song and dance is happening all weekend long at the Tennessee Performing Arts Center.

The songs that come from the mind of Nashville's Gary Nicholson often enhance the atmosphere inside a Texas roadhouse.

But talent and diversity gives him options. When he sings this weekend, it's not line-dancing or Texas-two steps that will fill the stage.

It's all ballet.

Nicholson's smoldering sound often originates with his hub-cap plated, vintage guitar.

George Jones, Bonnie Raitt, Ringo Starr and BB King, to name a few, are just a piece of the world-wide posse that sing his songs.

And fans have always danced to his music, just not like this.

The classically-trained dancers of the Nashville Ballet move on stage to the live performance of Nicholson and his signature guitar.

"But it's fascinating for me to see how things are choreographed and what kind of expression comes from dancers. That goes with the lyrics and the song," Nicholson said.

It's a unique combination, but in Music City all things are possible.

Three years ago, Nicholson and the ballet performed together to rave reviews and shouts of "bravo."

So consider this weekend the encore.

If you are looking for a dose of high quality sound and sights, it's happening this weekend at the Nashville Ballet.

Salsa Dreams with Gary Nicholson is playing Friday and Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m. at Tennessee Performing Arts Center's Polk Theater, at 505 Deaderick Street.
