NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -
A major announcement Wednesday could affect hundreds of homeowners in some of Nashville's most prestigious and preserved neighborhoods.
Piedmont Natural Gas announced they plan to build a pipeline through areas like Forest Hills, Oak Hill and the Radnor Lake State Natural Area.
Hundreds of neighbors in the area will soon be getting a letter from the company detailing what the project will mean for their property as well as purchasing a plat of their land for construction. Neighbors in South Davidson County where the pristine Radnor Lake State Park and Natural Area sits were not happy to hear that news.
Surrounding the park are some of Nashville's most expensive houses. The well-manicured and preserved habitat could soon be home to a $60 million construction project. Piedmont Natural Gas wants to build a nearly 14 mile pipeline that would run right through the area.
The company says the project is necessary to remain in compliance with the new Federal inspection and safety standards .
The pipeline would run from an existing Columbia Gulf natural gas line near Shire Drive to Piedmont's regulator station near Chickering road.
The company says they'll start conducting land surveys soon on affected neighbors' property and will have to purchase the right of way property needed.
But the company says the process will be minimally invasive and will not involve buying homes or large tracts of land. If you live in the affected area, Piedmont Natural Gas says they will only need to buy a small right of way on your property.
The Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation for state parks says they're still waiting for more information about the project but were told any decision will make sure the state park and surrounding natural area is protected.
The exact route of the proposed pipeline has not yet been finalized.
