Driver faces charges after pursuit

NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

A driver involved in a police chase in Madison Wednesday morning faces drunk driving and drug charges, according to Metro Police.

Police said Walter Sawyer, III, was arrested and charged.

According to Capt. Preston Brandimore, the pursuit began when an off-duty officer saw Sawyer's pickup truck traveling east on the westbound side of Old Hickory Boulevard in the Madison area.

Several vehicles had to swerve out of the way to avoid head-on collisions, Brandimore said.

"Anytime a vehicle is traveling the wrong way, especially on a stretch of road such as State Route 45, speeds can get up high. A head-on collision would be devastating," Brandimore said.

Police used spike strips to stop Sawyer's truck in the Lakewood area.
