Council defers resolution on County Clerk Arriola

NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

A Metro Council rules committee has decided to put off discussion of a resolution that would have asked the embattled County Clerk John Arriola to resign.

Arriola has been facing mounting pressure after the release of a state audit that said Arriola collected an estimated $119,000 over a five-year period for performing weddings that are supposed to be voluntary.

The committee decided the council should wait to vote until the district attorney weighs in on the audit's findings.

Councilman Robert Duvall had proposed the resolution that would have called for Arriola to resign, saying the findings in the audit are so egregious, he believes Arriola should be prosecuted.

"John knew better. He should have never done that. I've admired John. He's been a friend in the past, and I wish he could still be a friend. Probably with what I'm doing he won't be a friend any longer," Duvall said.

Arriola has denied any wrongdoing, saying the money was from optional gratuities.
