Zeph Wuchina was helping a friend move out of the Stewarts Ferry Apartments in Donelson around midnight when he spotted the sinking car.
Wuchina jumped in the water, pulled the female driver out of the vehicle and led her back to shore.
"I think anyone would have done that. I know anyone in that situation would have done it," Wuchina said.
"By the time the cops arrived, the car had already sank to where she would have drowned if she hadn't gotten out of that seat," Wuchina said.
Wuchina and his friend James Clayborne took the woman to their truck and tried to keep her warm while waiting for help to arrive.
According to other witnesses, the woman crashed after an argument with her boyfriend. Police said she later admitted to drinking and was charged with driving under the influence.
"She said that she and her boyfriend had a fight and that she wanted to go home," said Karen Nechvatal.
Paramedics took the woman, whose name has not been released, to a local hospital for an evaluation.
