SMYRNA, TN (WSMV) -
National Guard soldiers from the Air Medivac unit in Smyrna will depart for Afghanistan on Sunday.
The 45-person team will help evacuate U.S. soldiers, NATO forces and civilians in the country using UH-60 Blackhawk helicopters.
Before heading to Afghanistan, the unit will head to Fort Hood in Texas for special training.
The unit was supposed to leave on Saturday, but has been delayed until Sunday due to the rain.
On Saturday morning, families and friends attended a deployment ceremony at Smyrna's Volunteer Training Site at the support facility.
The unit will be gone for a year.
