NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -
With its final performance in the books, construction crews will start replacing the historic stage at the Ryman Auditorium on Saturday.
The current stage has been at the Ryman for six decades, and everyone from Johnny Cash to Bob Dylan has performed there.
Country star Keith Urban was among the last to perform on the old oak boards Friday night. It was his first live show in months, following vocal cord surgery.
Crews are replacing most of the stage so it can hold the weight of modern sound equipment. However, there will be an 18-inch strip of the original wood at the front of the stage. This way, performers can still follow in the footsteps of some of the world's greatest entertainers.
Crews will work around the clock to get the job done in two weeks.
The Band Perry is scheduled to be the first to perform on the new stage on Feb. 20.
