DICKSON, TN (WSMV) -
Officers put themselves in harm's way every day on the job. But, if it wasn't for one Middle Tennessee sheriff's deputy, a Dickson family might not be here today.
Dickson County Sheriff's Deputy David Hamilton says it's not unusual to have to go into someone's home while on duty. But, he's never had to run into a burning home. That's exactly what he did Tuesday morning. And it's a good thing he did, especially when you hear who was inside.
Hamilton was patrolling Highway 48 South in Dickson when he spotted a tool shed was on fire. The shed and a car were engulfed in flames. What's worse?
Deputy Hamilton had to kick in the front door and wake three people inside up from a deep sleep.
The family home of nearly 50 years was spared because Hamilton managed to call for help just in time. Best of all, thanks to his quick thinking and brave actions, everyone was okay including the family dog, Lucy.
The homeowner wasn't able to talk with us on camera. But, she says she couldn't be more thankful to Deputy Hamilton, the Tennessee City Volunteer Fire Department, and the Dickson County Rescue Squad for saving her family and her house.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but, crews believe it was electrical.
