Charges filed after teacher, aide fight at Bellevue school

NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

Teachers are supposed to set a good example for students, but an argument between a teacher and an aide turned violent on one local campus.

One of the women is now off the job and faces an assault charge, and she told her story only to Channel 4.

The teacher's aide says she feels like she had every reason to do get into the fight at Bellevue Middle School.

"I just grabbed and touched her face, that's all," said teacher's aide Debra Steptoe-Nunn.

"I didn't slap her real hard."

What happened in a single moment inside the school has Steptoe-Nunn off the job and facing an assault charge.

"I understand that I hit her, and everything, but it's up to the judge. I'm not the judge," she said.

Wednesday afternoon, a classroom spat spilled over to the school's office, where in front of other staff members, the special education aide hit her colleague, Rhonda St. Vincent.

When asked why she felt the need to strike the teacher, Steptoe-Nunn said, "well, I didn't know what I was doing at first. Because I was so upset, because she was picking on me and stuff."

According to police, St. Vincent tried to get away but Steptoe-Nunn chased her, and other staff members had to hold her back.

Steptoe-Nunn spoke freely about the incident to Channel 4 News, citing a rough past few weeks and two deaths in the family.

But she also blamed St. Vincent, and what she called a pattern of harassment over their year and a half working together.

"This woman has been harassing me ever since I've been in her classroom," Steptoe-Nunn said.

Either way, the teacher's aide faces charges and possible district discipline for losing her cool in one of the worst possible places to do so.

"No I'm not proud of what I've done," Steptoe-Nunn said. "And I do miss my child that I work with."

Steptoe-Nunn is suspended with pay while the district continues its investigation.
