ELIZABETHTON, Tenn. (AP) - Carter County Sheriff's officials say a 90-year-old woman battled a chimney fire herself for an hour before calling 911 for help.
The fire at Cordia Jones' home was reported Sunday evening in the Hampton community, according to the Johnson City Press, which quoted sheriff's Sgt. Brian Durham.
Dunham said Jones poured water onto a wall, trying to extinguish the flames, calling for help only when the fire spread.
Hampton/Valley Forge firefighters said the flames had gotten into the walls and ceiling when they arrived.
No injuries were reported.
